Meet Ingrid and Terry

We are warm, inclusive and non-judgmental.

We’ll go the extra mile to make a genuine difference.

Ingrid Steele

I’ve been working independently supporting people and organisations to grow and change since 2008, after 14 years working in mental health services and the Department of Health. I’m a qualified psychotherapist (including a specialism in hypnotherapy), coach and organisational development facilitator; a narcissism-aware therapist, trained also in mediation, restorative practice, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, NLP and reiki. Outside of everyday practice, I also co-chair the York Peer Group for HG Therapists.

Clients feed back that I am calm, warm and approachable, that they feel accepted and comfortable being themselves with me. It is important that you are in control of the therapeutic process and that sessions give you the space to explore what is important to you. Trained in the Human Givens approach to psychotherapy and counselling, my focus is on supporting people to meet their needs in balance. I will work respectfully and sensitively with people whatever they may be experiencing, such as longstanding or recent experiences of anxiety and depression, trauma, addiction, self harm or eating difficulties. You may be having relationship difficulties, challenges living in a blended family, be bereaved or dealing with some kind of loss. Or you may be exploring important aspects of yourself, such as gender, identity or neurodivergence.

We focus our attention on making sense of whatever’s happening for you, on building awareness, insight, clear goals and a genuine confidence in how you can use all of your resources to move forward. You will also develop a better understanding about what is happening in your brain and body, in your emotions, thoughts and behaviours. Sometimes our work includes learning how to be and feel safe within yourself as a foundation for building safer and healthier relationships with others. And above all, you should leave sessions feeling better in some way, have greater hope, motivation and clarity about your next steps.

Terry Gawthorpe

I have been social work qualified since 1988. I’m professionally registered with Social Work England and the British Association of Social Workers. I have worked with children and families all of my working life and am vastly experienced in this sector. My career has given me significant knowledge and experience in services including foster care, adoption and working as a children’s guardian independently in court representing children and young people on behalf the court. These experiences have also led me to chair, train and be a group leader.

Throughout my career, I have undertaken substantial training in counselling, mediation and a wide range of therapeutic interventions. I have worked as a practice teacher with social workers and am trained in undertaking investigations with the police relating to sexual, emotional and physical harm of young people and their families.

Clients feed back that I am highly motivated, dedicated and resourceful. I am told I have a rare capacity to build strong and open relationships with people, using deep listening skills and a non-judgmental style. I am person-centred in everything that I do, with a positive and caring outlook. I have successfully worked with people who have experienced a wide range of issues such as all kinds of trauma, social anxiety, eating disorders, compulsive behaviour, gender identity, addiction, non-school attendance, family dynamics, relationship difficulties.

I am also creative, enthusiastic and flexible to find new ways in which people’s experiences and views can be listened to and acted upon. I am deeply reflective and will consider the multifaceted issues that can influence people’s behaviours and dynamics within family situations to support them to find solutions. My practice is evidence-based and considered about how issues are tackled in order to have maximum impact and outcomes.

Inspired Therapy’s spiral

One of the oldest geometric shapes are spirals. The spiral is seen in animals, in snails or sheep’s horns, for example, and in nature from whirlpools to spinning galaxies. It is also found in cultures throughout history, marking an important symbol to people across societies, religions and beliefs.

We have a spiral as part of our identity at Inspired Therapy because it describes a universal pattern of creation, growth and evolution. It represents energy and can radiate outwards and draw inwards. We see the spiral as a symbol of wholeness, inviting us to accept ourselves as we are.
